I’m having a hard hard time getting the cable to push through. Would a small amount of some sort of lubricant help? Would it alter the performance of the sensor if I put a small dab of grease on the cable to get it to slide through? Also, there are two screws on the sensor … is it possible to temporarily open up the sensor, feed the cable through and then close the sensor housing?

It's better to replace these batteries with a 12v lithium ion battery pack from power tools. Apparently this many batteries in series causes one to wear out more than others causing a shorter life span of the batteries. You'll probably lose power on it again after a year or so.
